How Does A GPS Work

When people talk about “GPS,” they usually mean a GPS receiver unit, but the Global Positioning System (GPS) is actually a constellation of 27 Earth orbiting satellites. The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite network as a military navigation system, but opened it up to the private sector.

Each of these solar powered satellites circles the globe making two complete rotations every day. The orbits are arranged so that at anytime, anywhere on Earth, there are at least four satellites “visible” in the sky.

The GPS receiver’s job is: locate four or more of these satellites, figure the distance to each satellite, and use this information to determine its location. This operation is a simple mathematical principle called trilateration.

Once the receiver makes this calculation, it can tell you the latitude, longitude and altitude (or some similar measurement) of its current position. To make the navigation more user-friendly, most receivers will download this raw data into map.

The standard GPS tracking receiver will not only place you on a map at any particular location, but will also trace your path across a map as you move. The receiver stays in constant communication with GPS satellites to see how your location is changing. With this information and its built-in clock, the receiver can give you several pieces of valuable information: How far you’ve traveled (odometer), how long you’ve been traveling, current speed, average speed and a “bread crumb” trail showing you exactly where you have traveled on the map.

A GPS vehicle tracking device allows individual consumers and businesses to monitor a vehicles’s performance, speed and location along with daily starting and stopping times. It also allows you to locate your children or ederly family members in a few seconds. This can be done on the internet 24/7/365 days a year.

For vehicles, other special features that could be monitored include important vehicle security functions such as door locks, ignition controls and airbag deployment. “Geo-fencing” capabilities can be set up for specified geographic boundary limitations for both people and If the boundaries are crossed, an alert can be sent to you.

By using a GPS auto tracking device, businesses can track their fleet of cars and trucks in real time by installing an “active” vehicle tracking system. The active tracking system (AVL) solution gets GPS information and reports the position of thevehicle near real time, to the fleet management application

With equipment and machinery, the GPS tracking device will allow you to locate abandoned or stolen equipment.  It can monitor equipment for hours, verify the use of equipment, reduce equipment downtime and increase your profits.

GPS tracking devices let businesses better manage productivity, resulting in a return on the investment (ROI) far exceeding the cost of the GPS system. They also give peace of mind to individuals concerned about their family members.
