How GPS Tracking Works

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system developed and maintained by the U.S. government. Initially designed for military applications, civilian users have found numerous applications using GPS.
On March 29, 1996, a Presidential Decision Directive (PDD) was signed by President Clinton that described GPS as an international information utility. The PDD included the following directives:
- The U.S. government will continue to operate, maintain and provide basic GPS signals worldwide, free of direct user fees.
- The U.S. will advocate the acceptance of GPS and it’s augmentations as a standard for use by initiating international discussions and agreement with Japan and Europe.
How GPS Works
Radio signals are sent from orbiting satellites to earth. GPS tracking devices on the ground can collect and convert the radio signals into position, velocity, and time information.
Some GPS tracking receivers have the ability to store attribute information in addition to position information. Examples of attribute information are the condition of a street sign, the name of a road, or the condition of a fire hydrant. Position and attribute information can be stored in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to help users manage their assets more efficiently.

GPS Tracking Device Terms

A “Locate” is when a GPS Tracking device sends the location coordinates to the tracking system to be marked on a map. A recorded location with associated data such as date, time, speed, direction ect. is called a “Locate”
Motion activated GPS tracking device is when the unit only turns on when it senses motion or vibrations and sends out locations at a predefined rate for the time it is in motion and then shuts down when no more motion is detected.
Constant tracking is when a tracking device continues to send locates regardless of whether there is any motion.
Location on Request is when you only get a GPS location if you send the device a request for it to send back its location. The more locates you get the more dots you will see on the map and more closely you can follow the activity.
The advantage of a GPS data logger is very detailed report at a low cost with no monthly fees and no cost per locate, so you can get locates up to once every second.
The disadvantage of a non real-time system you have to retrieve the device from the vehicle to know where it has been.
Real-time GPS Tracking system is connected to the internet so you can view their location at any time anywhere from any web browser. There is no need to retrieve the GPS device to get the information you are looking for!
GPS Tracking Systems for Alzheimer’s Patients

- GPS Watch Tracker
Nearly 70% of people with Alzheimer’s disease will wander away from home and get lost. There are 31,000 Alzheimer’s patients who researcher Robert J. Koester estimates wanders per year. When someone with Alzheimer’s disease wanders, he or she is disorientated and unable to judge potentially dangerous places and situations. A GPS tracking system can assist a caregiver in several ways in keeping tabs on an Alzheimer’s patient.
A GPS tracker / locator are the perfect solution for these types of situations. They come as tags, wristbands and watches, each are adjustable to fit on a forearm or wrist. The material is made for comfort and is soft on the skin.
Any GPS tracking system should be researched before purchasing. You should be comfortable with a tracking system such as this when it come to the safety of your family members. This is a great product if you are a caregiver for someone who is mentally challenged.
Features of a watch GPS tracking devices:
You can get latitude and longitude by SMS or GPRS, and check position by google earth. Reports the last known location when it enters into the blind area. The GPS tracker sends an alert of Geofence to you when it breaches the restricted area. If the person still drives the tracker will send an over speed alert to you when the target exceeds the speed limit. The GPS tracker sends a low battery alert to the user when the battery is low.

How Does A GPS Work

When people talk about “GPS,” they usually mean a GPS receiver unit, but the Global Positioning System (GPS) is actually a constellation of 27 Earth orbiting satellites. The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite network as a military navigation system, but opened it up to the private sector.
Each of these solar powered satellites circles the globe making two complete rotations every day. The orbits are arranged so that at anytime, anywhere on Earth, there are at least four satellites “visible” in the sky.
The GPS receiver’s job is: locate four or more of these satellites, figure the distance to each satellite, and use this information to determine its location. This operation is a simple mathematical principle called trilateration.
Once the receiver makes this calculation, it can tell you the latitude, longitude and altitude (or some similar measurement) of its current position. To make the navigation more user-friendly, most receivers will download this raw data into map.
The standard GPS tracking receiver will not only place you on a map at any particular location, but will also trace your path across a map as you move. The receiver stays in constant communication with GPS satellites to see how your location is changing. With this information and its built-in clock, the receiver can give you several pieces of valuable information: How far you’ve traveled (odometer), how long you’ve been traveling, current speed, average speed and a “bread crumb” trail showing you exactly where you have traveled on the map.
Vehicle GPS Tracking Devices

- GPS Tracking Key
A GPS vehicle tracking device allows individual consumers and businesses to monitor a vehicles’s performance, speed and location along with daily starting and stopping times. It also allows you to locate your children or ederly family members in a few seconds. This can be done on the internet 24/7/365 days a year.
For vehicles, other special features that could be monitored include important vehicle security functions such as door locks, ignition controls and airbag deployment. “Geo-fencing” capabilities can be set up for specified geographic boundary limitations for both people and If the boundaries are crossed, an alert can be sent to you.
By using a GPS auto tracking device, businesses can track their fleet of cars and trucks in real time by installing an “active” vehicle tracking system. The active tracking system (AVL) solution gets GPS information and reports the position of thevehicle near real time, to the fleet management application
With equipment and machinery, the GPS tracking device will allow you to locate abandoned or stolen equipment. It can monitor equipment for hours, verify the use of equipment, reduce equipment downtime and increase your profits.
GPS tracking devices let businesses better manage productivity, resulting in a return on the investment (ROI) far exceeding the cost of the GPS system. They also give peace of mind to individuals concerned about their family members.
